This School Trumps My School

Not gonna lie...Pittsburgh has yet to impress me.  The city is kind of eh; the weather is bleh; the food is meh.  However, the Cathedral of Learning erased all of this from my mind.  What is the Cathedral of Learning?  Basically it's a part of the University of Pittsburgh--students have classes there--but way cooler than anything I've seen on a college campus.  Basically different countries have funded classrooms in the building and designed them based on the specific country.  Here is an example: the Israel Room.

It's a classroom!  A classroom!  Amazing.  Each room has different seating, windows, lighting, designs, and (this is the best) hidden chalkboards.  Here I am pretending to write on the one in the Chinese Room.

The rooms were so beautiful, they made me want to go to class.  If I went to school here, I would study all the time and pay attention in class, and never want to leave.  Well, I say that now, but that would probably change in a few weeks.

Maybe my mind would wander more because I would just be daydreaming about how cool these rooms are...and I would be writing stories that take place in other countries...*sigh*

And they're still adding more rooms!  I hope I can come back some day and see the rooms we didn't get to go in (some had classes in session) and the new ones.  See this ceiling?  It was hand-painted and took over seven months to complete!

This is the English Room.  It was the largest room we saw and it reminded me of pictures I saw of St. John's at Cambridge.  It just made me super excited for grad school; I hope at least some of my classrooms look like this.  How perfect!

This is the Armenian Room.  It reminded me of an old castle where princes and princesses would be tutored in Latin and mathematics.

The Greek Room was so picturesque but my picture of it was a little dark.  Alas.  This one turned out nicely.

The main part of the first floor was this great hall that reminded me of Hogwarts' Great Hall.  I wished I could be one of the students reading and writing at the cute little tables.  It was beyond gorgeous.  I really, really hope St. John's looks like this (pictures are convincing me it does!).  So, okay, Pittsburgh...you've got some stunning places.  But this was definitely a well-kept secret.  If you ever go to Pittsburgh, this is a must-see.  And the best part?  It's free!

Apologies...

Sorry for a lack of posts in Ireland.  I blame it on the city being amazing and pubs being really fun and staying up too late and getting up too early.  And now I'm in Pittsburgh.  Never any down time.  *sigh*  I'm hoping to blog Pittsburgh and the Sigma Tau Delta Convention, but that means there will be a delay in the Ireland posts.  I do hope to update Ireland within the next two weeks, though.  So, to keep you until then, here are links to all of Vinnie's vlogs on Ireland.  Subscribe to his channel; it's awesome!

Goodbye Dublin, Hello Galway

Okay, sorry for not updating sooner.  It's been an incredibly hectic few days with lots of traveling, touring, and pub-hopping.  Late nights, early mornings, full days.  Ex-haust-ing.  So.  Day two.  The day started out interesting.  I set my alarm for 7:15 so that Vinnie and I could be ready and eat breakfast by 9:00.  So we got up, got ready, went down to breakfast.  None of our other travelers were there.  Okay.  We got our breakfast, which was mucho delicioso, and ate.

Only about 1/3 of the amount of food I ate for breakfast.
What are you gonna do?  It was free.  Score.

Finally a little before 9:00, our teacher, Paula, came down to breakfast.  "You guys are up early," she said.  "Where is everyone?" I asked.  "It's almost nine.  Don't we have to go soon?"  Paula looked really alarmed then.  "9:00?  Oh, God, it's not that late already is it?"  Then she looked at her watch.  "No," she said, "it's only 8:00."  Whaaaaat?!  Turns out I set my phone to the London time zone (which is an hour faster than Ireland) so Vinnie and I actually got up at 6:15.  Ugh.  It was rather horrifying and hilarious.

After that honest mistake, we took a bus tour of Dublin.  It was sunny outside but horribly windy sitting on top of the double decker bus.  Dublin's a nice city, but not super impressive.  Milwaukee is a lot cleaner and classy.  However, Milwaukee can't hold a candle to Dublin architecture.

We got to see the Guinness Brewery which is HUGE!  I think we're going to tour it later this week when we head back to Dublin.  I heard their glass room at the top of the brewery offers the best view of the city (plus you get a free pint of Guinness!).  After that we took a walking tour of the city.  Our tour guide took us to the GPO (General Post Office) where the (in)famous Easter Rising took place.  You can still see the bullet holes in the walls.  We learned all about Ireland's early history--the arrival of the Vikings and the British's control.  The coolest place we went in the city, though, was Kilmainham Jail.  This was the famous jail that housed many of the Easter Rising rebels and where many of them were also unjustly executed.  Much of the prison is just how it originally was in the early 1900s.  The place was ominous and freezing cold and a historical marvel.  I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in Irish history.  (And I'll plug it again: for an entertaining and comprehensive rendition of Ireland's Easter Rising, read Roddy Doyle's A Star Called Henry.  You won't regret it.)

Gucki really enjoyed visiting Kilmainham Jail.  His scared
face is not as good as mine.  Also, he's lucky I didn't leave
his creepy little self locked in one of the jail cells.

Wore my combat boots to pay homage to the soldiers.  Also,
I'm standing right where the rebels were shot and buried.

Later in the afternoon, we got the most delicious gelato--melon and nutella (not together, obviously) and pasties to eat on the train.  Then we hopped on a train to Galway.  It was seriously the nicest train I've ever been on.  First of all, it had my name on an electronic label next to my seat.  Awesome!  Also, it was nice and quiet and clean.  Just a lovely place for a nap.  When we got to Galway we checked into our hotel.  After we settled in, we decided to go for a walk to explore the city.  We ended up at little pub that was part of the Spanish Arch Hotel.  It was small and crowded and cozy and, most importantly, there was a live Irish band!  I got a Smithwick's beer (per the bartender's recommendation) and we listened to music and chatted.  After that we went to another pub, though I can't remember the name.  Finnegan's maybe?  It was even smaller, and there wasn't a live band.  We got Captain Morgan and Fanta and chatted with a group of Americans.  One them, this kid John, was from La Crosse!  Crazy.  Also, we ran into Kaitlin!  Did I mention Kaitlin?  We met her at the O'Hare airport, saw her on the flight from Paris to Dublin, and now we saw her again!  Too funny.

Then we went home and literally collapsed into bed.  What a day.  What.  A.  Day.  And it only gets more exciting.

Yesterday in Less Than 3 Minutes!

For  more audio-visual look at our day yesterday (or more like Vinnie's), check out Vinnie's vlog here.  You won't regret it, and it'll keep you entertained until my next blog post.

We Made It!

Well, we made it to Ireland!  Huzzah!  And we ran into no problems with customs, turbulence, security check points, or anything else.

L to R: Paula, Audrey, Me, Vinnie, Rachel, Sami, Ashlee, Beckie
(Not Pictured: Laine)

The flight from Chicago to Paris was fast and lovely.  Food: surprisingly delicious.  I had chicken and noodles in wine sauce.  Wine sauce!  On an airplane!  I also watched The King's Speech which was a wonderful film.  Sleeping, though was rather awful.  No leg room and my eye mask was so tight it was giving me a headache.  Still, I slept a bit.  We arrived in Paris and got delayed in security, but that meant we didn't have to sit around and wait for our plane very long.  My view of Paris was rather drab and industrial so that was unfortunate.  I hope to see the real city some day.  I dozed on the flight to Dublin, and though I felt on the brink of collapse when we got to the city, we couldn't check into our hotel for a few more hours.

So, we got lunch at a little Irish pub.  Our waiter was adorable and hilarious.  The food was good; I got a chicken potato pancake with bacon leek sauce (as you can see, though, the pancake is more like a crepe).  But it was soooo expensive!  How unfortunate.

Then we wandered the city a bit.  We saw the General Post Office where the Irish revolutionaries fought during the Easter Rising of 1916.  We saw a handful of statues.  We saw the Garden of Remembrance.  The weather was rather chilly, overcast, but no rain thankfully.  In fact, there were tons of beautiful flowers.

Afterwards we crashed at the hotel and napped for a while.  Then we gathered for dinner and at Bar Italia.  We had delicious pizza and good conversation.  By this time it was late and we wandered a bit in some touristy shops, listening to bands that were playing inside the pubs, and then came back to the hotel.  Now, exhausted again, I'm chillaxing and writing this.  Tomorrow I expect an early morning and a traditional Irish breakfast.  After that we're doing a Hop-On/Hop-Off Bus Tour of Dublin before taking a train to Galway.

Oh!  And you may ask...what has Gucki been up to?  He's been sitting in the hotel room, watching cricket on the tele.  Laaaazzzzyyy!

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Creepster Gnome

Meet Gucki.  Gucki is a gnome.  To be more specific, Gucki is a creepy, fear-inducing gnome.  Why?  Just look at him.  Gives me shivers.  Let me tell you Gucki's history and how he has come to live with me.  Normally I would not let such a creepy, fear-inducing gnome into my house.  But it wasn't exactly my choice.  Shortly after Christmas I went to visit my friends Anna and Angela at Anna's house.  Anna's mom was there and for Christmas she had received a book about gnomes and a little gnome doll named Gucki.  She somehow managed to pawn off the gnome book on me (probably because I have a hard time turning away books) and Gucki on Angela.  Angela didn't want it, but Anna secretly slipped it into Angela's coat pocket when she wasn't looking.  On another occasion Angela slipped it into Anna's purse.  Then Anna snuck it into my purse.  Then, visiting Anna again at her house, I snuck upstairs and put it under her covers.  Since then Gucki has been sneaking into our coat pockets and purses and desk drawers and cars.  Creepster as he is.

Yesterday I brought Gucki to dinner to secretly slip into Angela's purse (Anna was smart enough to only bring a little wallet).  I gave it to Anna to put in her bag while I hugged Angela goodbye.  Anna said she did it.  Success!  So I dropped Anna off at her house.  Anna got out of the car, told me to have a good trip, and suddenly threw Gucki onto the passenger's seat.  "Bring him with you to Ireland!" she shouted before she slammed the door and ran to her house.  Damn her.  But it seemed like a cute idea.  So.  I am bringing creepster Gucki with me to Ireland and he will travel alongside me.  More pictures of our adventures will be up over the next few days!

It's Awkward and Awesome Thursday! (Okay...But It's Actually Saturday Now...)

Sorry I'm posting this on Saturday.  It's been a busy week.  Thursday, especially, was busy since I had my last exam that day, three classes, a project meeting, violin lessons, packing for Ireland, and a trip back home.  So, it was an awesome and awkward week, but I'm telling you about it now...a few days later...deal with it.

Want to know where I learned to be so awkward and awesome?  From this girl right here.  This is my sister.  She embodies both awkwardness and awesomeness and over the years it has rubbed off on me.  Thanks, big sis!

AWKWARD
*The word "awkward."  I think I've misspelled it every time since I started this blog.
*Going into the Fossil store.  First of all, I look at one watch and the salesman is at my side, opening the cabinet, and letting me try it on.  Have you ever heard of window shopping, sir?  Did I ask to try it on?  Then I try it on to be nice and he tells me I'm putting it on wrong.  It's a watch!  The face is right side up.  What else is there to know about putting it on?  I didn't say this, though, so then he just stared at me for a bit.  Then my sister came over and in her awkward and awesome way said, "That is ugly as hell."  I think the salesman wanted to rib our heads off.
*Falling down that damn snowy hill outside of my apartment.  I need to stop wearing shoes with no tread.  Thank the Lord no one else was around (again).
*Not being able to understand my violin teacher's Russian accent.  There are four violin strings: G, D, A, and E.  G, D, and E all sound exactly the same when you have a Russian accent.  This causes a few difficulties and embarrassments for poor Americans.

AWESOME
*I leave for Ireland today! (Okay, I know that didn't happen between the last two Thursdays, but I'm soooo excited!)
*My new sunglasses from Forever 21 which were only $5!  (see above photo)
*Acing all of my exams and papers from the past few weeks!  Hard work totally pays off.
*Rootbeer from St. Francis Brewery.  Mmmm...can't beat the real stuff.
*A Star Called Henry.  Awesome book.  Read it.
*The sun finally coming out.  Well, sort of.  I'm being optimistic.  Hopefully in a few weeks the snow will be gone.
*Did I mention I'm going to Ireland today?  :)

What a shame...

Me: Ooo...cookies.  What kind?
Jocelyn: Chocolate chip...
Me: Ooo...
Jocelyn:...and butterscotch chip...
Me: OOO...
Jocelyn:...and raisin.
Me: Raisin?  Why would you ruin a perfectly good cookie with raisins?
Jocelyn: Anna told me to put them in.  She loves raisins.
Me: Anna has a gluten allergy.  She can't even eat the cookies!

It's Awkward and Awesome Thursday!

034/365: Twins? (March 3, 2011)

AWKWARD
-Constantly rubbing my eyes because of my contacts and people thinking I’m crying.
-Saying “Hi!” to people in the hallway and they just walk right past me.  Then mumbling half to myself and half to the other people walking nearby who saw the interaction: “Must not have heard me…” so that I don’t look like a weirdo.  Even though I do.
-Forgetting to wear deodorant.  Good thing I don’t exert myself attending lectures.
-Reaching for the door just when someone on the other side swings it open and thus getting hit really hard in the shoulder and stumbling backwards like a crazy person.
-Liquid eyeliner.  And a shaky hand.
-Spilling milk all over the stove and not being able to clean it up because I thought the burners didn’t come off.  Then having my roommate come up to me and ask, “Um…Deanie…did you happen to spill milk on the stove?”  Me: “Yeah, sorry, I tried cleaning it up but the burners don’t come off.”  Rommie: “Um….actually, they do.  You just pull them up, like this.”  And then she proceeds to easily pull them off.  Oh.  Oops.
-Completely wiping out whilst trying to walk up a slippery snowy hillside.  Basically stepping up to my knee in snow, throwing out my arm to catch myself and sinking up to my elbow in snow, and getting a ton of snow in my bag so my books get all wet.  Thank God no one was watching (unless some creepers were by their apartment windows).

AWESOME
-Writing a kick-ass research paper on zombies.  It was so kick-ass that it was 12 pages instead of the required 5-7.
-Winning the Oscar bid at my school (17/24 guesses right!) and winning a book of my choice!  I picked The Black Tower by Louis Bayard.
-Watching Firefly with Vinnie (4th time for me; 1st time for him).
-Lemonade Girl Scout Cookies
-Being able to take twin-esque pictures on my Mac (see above).
-TheSixtyOne.  If you haven’t discovered this website yet, do yourself a favor and check it out.
-The show Raising Hope and pretty much everyone on it, especially Garret Dillahunt.  Also, allowing myself to watch three episodes of it in a row instead of doing homework.
-Loving the two novels I have to read for class: Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte and A Star Called Henry by Roddy Doyle.
-Having family visit me last weekend!  Love seeing my aunt and uncle, Josie and Ron!
-Going to Ireland NEXT WEEKEND!

365 Fun!
